Dr B. C. Roy was one of the great sons Bengal has ever produced. He always thought about and fought for West Bengal. He is therefore, rightly called the Maker of West Bengal'.

Bidhan Chandra was born at Patna on July 1, in 1882. Prakash Chandra and Kamini Devi were his parents. He received his primary education at Patna. Then he was admitted at the Calcutta Medical College. Bidhan Chandra did his M.D. with credit and went to England for higher studies. He came back to India after successfully completing his education there and joined politics. After independence Bidhan Chandra became the second Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1948. He was in the post till his death in 1962. As Chief Minister, Dr. Roy did many things for the state. Durgapur, Haldia, Kalyani, Digha, Kharagpur I.I.T., Salt Lake City, etc. are some of his great achievements. He received the 'Bharat Ratna' in 1961.

This great doctor and statesman died in 1962 interestingly, on July 1, the date on which he was born. What Bengal needs most at this moment is certainly a great leader like Dr. B. C. Roy.
