Amartya Sen is the second Nobel winner from Bengal. This great economist was born on 3 November, 1933. His parents were Ashutosh Sen and Amita Sen. Both were ardent followers of Rabindranath who named him ‘Amartya'. Sri Sen had his early education at Santiniketan and next at Presidency College, Kolkata and finally in Cambridge. He was a brilliant student. Back to India he became the head of Economics Department of Jadavpur University.

Later he taught at Delhi University and next in London School of Economics at Oxford. Finally he became Master of Trinity College,Cambridge in 1997. He won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998. His books on 'Economic Inequality as well as 'Poverty and Famines' are famous. He is the founder of welfare economics which touches the lives of the poorest section of the people of the society. He has set up ‘Pratichi' at Santiniketan for the welfare of the poor rural people of Bengal. Sri Sen has done us proud.
